TODAY IN HOUSING

The Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, announced today (Monday) he has appointed Dr Pauleen Lane CBE as Deputy Chair to the board of English Partnerships (EP).

English Partnerships is the national regeneration agency for England. It is a key delivery body for the Government's Sustainable Communities programme, which addresses housing shortages, homes for key workers, affordable housing and the problems of abandonment and decay.

It also has a major role in the remediation and reuse of brownfield land and regeneration of areas in need of renewal. It works closely with other stakeholders, including the Housing Corporation, Regional Development Agencies, local government and the private sector.

Pauleen Lane succeeds James Tuckey, who stood down last month.  Pauleen Lane was first appointed to the EP board in January 2000 and re-appointed in 2003 to serve a further two years. Her current appointment has now been extended until 30 June 2007.

She is a civil engineer by profession, and worked in local authorities for five years in transportation, bridge and highway design, and construction. She is also active in the Institution of Civil Engineers and holds an academic post in Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester.

The Deputy Prime Minister said: "I am delighted Pauleen Lane has accepted the appointment as Deputy Chair on the Board of EP.

"She has many years experience in infrastructure and construction and local authority operations, which are areas of key importance for English Partnerships, and she has proved to be a highly effective board member."

In welcoming the appointment, Margaret Ford, Chairman of English Partnerships, said: "I have valued Pauleen's experience and wisdom as a Board Member of English Partnerships and I am therefore extremely pleased that she has agreed to take on the role of Deputy Chairman.

"I know she will bring many excellent qualities to the job, which I am sure will be undertaken with her usual energy and enthusiasm."
