A local authority has decided to pay the living wage to its directly-employed staff. Winchester City Council already pays the minimum wage and says it will meet the £15-20k extra cost within its existing budgets. The living wage is calculated to be the minimum hourly rate needed to sustain a basic but acceptable standard of living. It is currently set at £7.45 per hour (£8.55 in London).
