A 21-year-old man arrested at a housing association flat in central London has become the first person to be jailed under the new anti-squatting laws.
Alex Haigh, originally from Plymouth, was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to occupying the Pimlico flat without permission. The Crown Prosecution Service has since confirmed that he is the first person to receive a custodial sentence as a result of the new legislation, which came into force at the start of September.
