Liberal Democrats won all three of this week's council by-elections - including a gain from Tories - with little sign that they are being harmed by either membership of the coalition Government or David Laws' resignation as Treasury Chief Secretary.

Their candidate John Griffin took South Oxfordshire District's Crowmarsh seat off Conservatives on a double digit swing.

Although Lib Dems defended county and city seats at St Albans, Hertfordshire, there was a boost for Labour which took second place from Tories at Ashley compared with the main council poll on the same day as the general election.

Hertfordshire County - St Albans South: Lib Dem 1482, C 1250, Lab 540, Green 249.    (June 2009 - Lib Dem 1902, C 1510, Lab 743, Green 661).
Lib Dem hold. Swing 0.7% Lib Dem to C.

St Albans City - Ashley: Lib Dem 774, Lab 354, C 342, Green 93. (May 2010 - Lib Dem 2006, C 1117, Lab 712, Green 244). Lib Dem hold. Swing 2.4% Lib Dem to Lab.

South Oxfordshire District - Crowmarsh: Lib Dem 327, C 258. (May 2007 - C 430, Lib Dem 364). Lib Dem gain from C. Swing 10.1% C to Lib Dem.
