Mayor of London Boris Johnson has been accused of a "complete lack of ambition" for setting a target to build 42,000 new homes a year in the capital.

London Assembly Labour Group planning spokesperson Nicky Gavron said the figure fell well short of the 62,000 new homes a year figure, which analysis from City Hall says is necessatry to clear the backlog within 10 years.

With the mayor dismissing calls for higher housebuilding targets, Gavron challenged him to “at least do the bare minimum” by raising his target to 49,000 per year, which would allow the capital’s backlog of housing need to be cleared within 20 years.

The comments came after today’s session of the Examination in Public at City Hall, where the Mayor’s alterations to the London Plan were being debated. Gavron argued that the Mayor’s plan grossly underestimates the need for decent homes and fails differentiate between the different types of housing required.

Gavron also called on the Mayor to provide strategic direction to London boroughs on how they should make up the difference between the London Plan target and the capital’s true need for housing.

Nicky Gavron said: “The Mayor’s housing targets show a complete absence of ambition. Despite his own evidence base showing that London needs to build 62,000 new homes a year to clear the backlog of demand within 10 years, the new alterations to the London Plan only set the target at 42,000. Boris should at least do the bare minimum and raise his target to 49,000.

“Boris Johnson has utterly failed Londoners on housing over the past six years of his mayoralty. Property prices and rental charges are soaring to unsustainable levels, but the London Plan is missing the mark. People will wonder what it will take for Boris to take London’s housing crisis seriously.”
