Stockport Homes has been working in partnership with Construction Youth Trust to fund the delivery of the Budding Builders ‘Mobile Classroom’ Programme. The programme delivers practical construction skills training in the heart of local communities, and so far has been delivered in Adswood and Brinnington.
The programme is an eight week course that covers carpentry, joinery, plumbing, tiling, painting and decorating, electrics and plastering.
Trainees also take part in sessions focusing on general construction industry knowledge, pre-employment training and CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Health and Safety training, which is a requirement to work on most construction sites.
So far, 17 young people living in Stockport aged 17 - 30 have completed the programme. Eight of these youngsters have gone on to employment in construction related areas, including full-time labouring jobs and apprenticeships.
Tom Jackson, one of the budding builders said, “I have enjoyed the course and learnt construction and communication skills.”
Nicola Green, Customer Involvement Officer, Stockport Homes said, “Working alongside Construction Youth Trust has enabled us to offer young people in Stockport a stepping stone into the construction industry. We have had some great successes from each programme and it has been great to see young people getting employment as a result of the programme. We have found the partnership has really allowed us to improve our outcomes for young people.”
Stuart Hamilton, North West Manager for Construction Youth Trust commented, “We have been very pleased with the success of the programme and are delighted to provide local young people with enhanced employment opportunities. Construction Youth Trust values links with housing providers such as Stockport Homes who provide their local community with opportunities like the Mobile Classroom. It is through these partnerships that we are able to inspire and enable young people to overcome barriers and build better futures.”
