A "Flying Start" at CGA

Flying Start Students
As part of its commitment to employabillity and and skills Community Gateway Association(CGA) has recently completed its first ‘Flying Start’ apprentice programme.
The programme was developed and delivered by CGA and Preston’s College through the organisations strategic alliance.
‘Flying Start’ was a 3 week pre-apprenticeship course, providing an opportunity for young people to enrich their skills and employment experience on their journey to full time employment. The programme delivered training in key areas including:
- Interview and job application skills
- Emergency first aid
- Professional use of social media
- Health and safety
- Customer care
Students also experienced a minimum of 2 days work experience working for CGA within a variety of teams and roles.
12 students successfully completed the programme and at the end of the 3 weeks they were interviewed for upcoming apprenticeship vacancies at CGA.
Five of the students were successful in gaining an apprenticeship and the organisation assisted 3 others with short term paid work placements
From the feedback recieved, all of the students enjoyed and benefited from the programme
Diane Bellinger CGA Chief Executive, along with Lis Smith, Principal of Preston’s College, presented everyone with their certificates and awards at a graduation ceremony held on 1st August.
The programme was such a success both organisations are already planning next years event.
