Sovereign appoints new finance director Sovereign appoints new finance director

Sovereign Housing Association has appointed a new finance director.

Mark Hattersley, currently director of finance and infrastructure at the University of Staffordshire, will take up his role at the 37,500-home provider from the start of 2015.

He takes over from Martin Huckerby, Sovereign’s first and only finance director, who is retiring in December after 25 years in the job.

Mark originally studied electronic systems engineering at Aston University before moving into accountancy, working in manufacturing, airports and more recently the charitable sector.

He was the finance director of Birmingham International Airport before taking up his role with the University of Staffordshire.

Mark said: “It’s a fantastically exciting opportunity and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m joining Sovereign at a challenging time for the sector, but from everything I’ve seen about the organisation, it’s clear that they are one of the leading associations and, while there are challenges, I’m confident about Sovereign’s ability to perform in the future.

“Martin has led the finance function very capably since Sovereign was formed, so there’s a hard act to follow. But I’m looking forward to being part of a very successful team and taking that success forwards."

Sovereign’s chief executive, Ann Santry, said: “Under Martin’s financial stewardship, we have had two successful bond issues and maintained a high credit rating, enabling us to deliver our growth strategy and a substantial development programme across the south and south-west of England.”

“I am confident that Mark will build on our success to date so we are able to do even more for our residents and communities in the future, and I look forward to him joining the team in January.”
