A 23-year-old female care worker who was arrested in connection with the suspected poisoning of sheltered housing tenants and staff has been placed in a psychiatric unit.

Run by social landlord Housing & Care 21, the Goldfield Court scheme in West Bromwich has seen 16 people affected by what was at first believed to be food poisoning in the last few days.

The 93-flat complex provides extra care housing for the elderly, and is a joint operation between Housing & Care 21 and Sandwell Council.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, one tenant said: “It looks like food from the restaurant kitchens and each individual kitchen has been taken away for tests.

“I know a few residents and some members of staff had suffered vomiting and diarrhoea over the last few days but the staff won’t tell us much else.

“I just know a staff member has been arrested. I love it here and it has come as quite a shock.”

In a statement, Housing & Care 21 said: "Housing & Care 21 can confirm that a care worker has been suspended from Goldfield independent living scheme in West Bromwich.

"We are providing information and assistance to the police and Sandwell Adult Social Care Services and will support them with any further investigation. Our thoughts are with both residents and staff at the Goldfield community and we are ensuring they are supported during this difficult time."

Police in Sandwell have started an investigation and have said that further tests and enquires are underway to determine the exact nature and cause of the illness.
