Specialist affordable housing developer Mulbury Homes has started work on a £11.6m development of over 100 new homes in Wavertree, Liverpool.

The scheme, which is being developed on behalf of housing association and regeneration specialist Riverside, will revitalise a derelict five acre site on a key route into Liverpool City Centre.

The scheme comprises a total of 108 new homes, including a mix of 36 one-bedroom apartments in three separate blocks, 40 two-bedroom houses and 32 three-bedroom houses to made available for affordable rent.

Contractors are currently demolishing an old warehouse on the site, formerly used as a Royal Mail delivery depot and later an indoor go-karting track. Manchester-based Harbur Construction will begin building work on the new homes later in the summer.

Greg Mulligan, a director of Mulbury Homes, said: “We have worked closely with Riverside and Liverpool City Council to design an inspiring scheme that will provide modern, energy-efficient homes, but which will also fit well with the surrounding Victorian housing.

“This is a large development that will increase the supply of affordable homes in Wavertree and also regenerate a key gateway between Wavertree and Liverpool.”

Justine Gore, development manager at Riverside, said:  “We are delighted to be working with Mulbury and Liverpool City Council to provide a large mix of much need affordable housing in the area, especially for smaller properties following the introduction of the under-occupancy charge.” 

All of the houses in the development have large rear gardens and ample parking, while each apartment building has its own designated amenity space and combined bin and bicycle storage.

The homes, scheduled to be completed in early 2016, will feature an array of energy saving features, as well as meeting Secured by Design principles which focus on safety, security and crime prevention.
