Tottenham 'war zone' comment confirmed by council Tottenham 'war zone' comment confirmed by council

Haringey Council has confirmed that one of its senior officers described Tottenham as a "war zone".

Writing in reply to Tottenham resident Martin Ball, the council's chief executive, Nick Walkley, confirmed that director of regeneration Lyn Garner (pictured) had indeed made the comment.

However, Mr Walkley insisted Ms Garner's words, which were made while on a bus tour of the borough all the way back in June, were "taken out of context".

The chief executive wrote: “The director of regeneration has made no statement in public or private referring to Tottenham in general as a war-zone.

“The comment your allegations refer to is taken out of context and specifically related to the appearance of one area during major disruptive works.

“The council has made a statement confirming that the comments attributed have been taken out of context.”

Martin Ball, a community activist in the borough, said: "To hide behind procedural rules and refuse to take further action reveals the contempt Nick Walkley has for the Tottenham community. We deserve an apology from Lyn Garner and a fuller explanation of the context in which she insulted Tottenham.

"The council's regeneration agenda is controversial and has been opposed by many sections of the Tottenham community. So, if the person leading on the regeneration is disparaging the area then how confident can people be that their views to not be bulldozed out of the way actually matters?"

Mr Ball has been having a running battle with the council over its redevelopment plans and with Tottenham Hotspurs over its new stadium proposals, with the activist writing exclusively for 24dash last month.
