Two people have been arrested after the body of a 49-year-old woman was found on the premises of a housing association property.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said that the body was discovered in the back garden of the home on Sunday afternoon.

The house on Heliers Drive in Salford belongs to housing association Guinness Northern Counties, which said in a statement: "This is a very unfortunate incident and our sympathy goes out to the friends and family of the victim. We are doing everything we can to assist Greater Manchester Police with their enquiries.”

Officers answered a call from an ambulance crew and found the body of the victim, who had suffered some cuts to the head. She was declared dead at the scene.

GMP has confirmed that a 34-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the dead woman.

Detective Superintendent Jon Chadwick, of the major incident team, said: "We are still in the early stages of this investigation so we do not yet know exactly what happened.

"We can say that a woman has died in sudden and tragic circumstances and we are determined to find out what led up to this.

"We have arrested two people in connection with the death and this will allow us to interview them under caution and to get full accounts from them.

"We have already spoken to a number of neighbours and this will continue throughout the day. As a result, residents will see an increased police presence in the area and we trust they will be reassured by this.

"We also intend to keep people updated as the investigation progresses."
