The enormous Gherkin skyscraper in the City of London has come on the market, after being placed in receivership in April.

Officially known as 30 St Mary Axe, the building is expected to fetch around £650 million, according to estate agents Savills.

Speaking to the BBC, Stephen Down of Savills said interest was expected from Chinese, Hong Kong and American investors.

The 41-storey building fell into problems in April when one its owners, German firm IVG Immobilien, filed for insolvency.

IVG jointly owned the Gherkin with private equity firm Evans Randall.

The building opened in April 2004, costing £138 million to construct.
