It’s something most of us would rather not think about - how loved ones will pay for the cost of our funeral after we pass away.

Now, a Durham based non-profit making credit union, Prince Bishops Community Bank (PBCB), is creating a new way for people to pay in advance for funeral arrangements.

PBCB has joined forces with Regal Bridge to offer people from the Tyne to the Tees a low cost way to pay for their funeral - either for an upfront fixed fee or spread over instalments.

Lesley Richardson, Manager of PBCB, said: “Difficult though it is, many people are now choosing to pre-pay for their funeral arrangements while they are alive and well. By doing so, it’s possible get some peace of mind knowing it will be one less thing for your family to have to worry about.

“Thinking about this now gives people the time to plan their funeral well in advance. This means family members can be sure exactly what their loved one wanted and that their wishes are respected.”

The pre-paid funeral packages are offered by Regal Bridge - an independent funeral planning company in Stanley with extensive experience of providing specially tailored funeral packages for families.

There are three pre-paid packages available through PBCB with the bronze package costing £3,395 (£17.64 per week) and includes transfer to the funeral director, guidance to relatives and funeral arrangements, a wooden casket, one hearse and a contribution to third party costs including burial, doctors and receiving and transporting of flowers.  The money is completely safe and sits with the Funeral Planning Trust until it is needed.

Scott Christie, Director of Regal Bridge, said: “The prepaid funeral package we have put together in partnership with PBCB removes the worry of who will take care of funeral arrangements. It fixes the cost in advance and ensures all the essentials are taken care of.

“Sadly this is an issue which older people do often worry about – they don’t like the idea that they might leave their family with the burden of the cost of their funeral and our new package aims to help them.”

The new package was launched at an event in Stanley town centre this month. Staff from PBCB and Regal Bridge were on hand to offer advice to people about the details of the new package.

Local councillor for Stanley, Cllr. Carl Marshall, was at the event with his family to open savings accounts for his young children.  He said, “The cost of funeral care is rising and these new pre-paid funeral packages by Prince Bishops Community Bank make it more affordable.  People can access finance from Prince Bishops Community Bank and now plan for the future.

“The funeral packages add to the excellent range of products that are already available by the Prince Bishops Community Bank.”
