A luxury apartment block in New York is to be built with a 'poor door' - an entrance that lower class individuals can use to enter the building without interfering with the routines of richer folk.

Developer Extell was only given permission to build the 33-storey block in Manhattan if it constructed low-income housing within it.

Though happy to comply with the order, Extell has decided to get around the problem of potential buyers of the $1,500 per sqft luxury flats having to mix with lowly types by giving the two classes separate entrances.

When completed, the apartment block will offer 219 market-rate condos and 55 low-income homes.

To be located on floors two through six, the low income units will be available for around $1,000 a month.
