England captain Steven Gerrard has retired from international football after making 114 appearances for his country, including three at the disastrous World Cup this summer.

The 34-year-old Liverpool midfielder scored 21 goals for England.

He said: "I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country. It's a sad day for me."

Last year Gerrard launched a new affordable homes project in his home town of Huyton. The now former England star was on site to mark the start of work at Bluebell Park in Knowsley - a scheme that will provide 101 new homes for rent to over 55s that need extra care and support to live independently. The £14.4m development, driven by Knowsley Housing Trust in partnership with Knowsley Council, is being built on the site of the former Wingate Towers flats.

Gerrard was brought up in Huyton and said he was pleased to return and support the project.
