Jamie Norman from the Welwyn Hatfield Community Housing Trust has been named ‘Apprentice of the Year’ at a prestigious national award ceremony held on 16 July 2014.

Run by a National Federation of housing organisations (the NFA), the awards celebrate some of the brightest and best in housing from around the country.  There are ten categories in total, designed to recognise the most innovative projects, and honour the commitment and dedication of the nation’s housing staff.  The category of ‘Apprentice of the Year’ is to showcase young people who particularly shine for their outstanding achievements, both in the workplace and through their studies, and who have positively impacted upon their team,  organisation and the wider community.

Jamie was awarded the accolade of ‘Apprentice of the Year’ in the under 25s group, commended for the significant contribution he has made to the work of the Trust and within the Welwyn Hatfield borough, often outside of work time.

Jamie joined the Trust in July 2013 and is undertaking a Business Administration level 2 apprenticeship.  Since starting, Jamie has consistently demonstrated excellent personal, team and work based skills, even to the point of coaching other colleagues.  He regularly attends community events in his own time, for example the Trust’s innovative waste cage days and volunteering to serve Christmas lunch to sheltered scheme residents.  He has also acted as an ambassador in promoting the apprenticeships, having given a presentation to over 60 Year 11 pupils at his old secondary school.

Chair of the Trust’s Management Board, Paul Wren, says: “We are delighted for Jamie and immensely proud of his achievement.  The Trust is dedicated to harnessing local talent, supporting residents to gain skills, training and employment through our apprenticeship scheme.  This award to recognise Jamie’s hard work and commitment prove just how valuable such a venture is.  I have no doubt in my mind that Jamie and our other apprentices have very bright futures ahead.”

This recent accolade comes hot on the heels of other good news for Jamie: having been awarded ‘Employee of the Year’ at the Trust’s annual recognition ceremony earlier this year, he has also now been successfully appointed to the post of Trainee Surveyor.
