Mark Henderson - chief executive of Home Group, one the UK's largest housing associations – writes about how coming top of last year's Top 50 Landlord list gave the organisation a big morale boost.

It had to have been the most frantic scramble to download an app since the advent of Candy Crush.

This veritable tome’s decision to publish the inaugural Top 50 Landlords listing via its new app rather than on its website was a stroke of genius when it comes to driving traffic to your new digital channel.

I recall there being a few frantic exchanges at Home Group’s head office in Newcastle as the comms team battled with IT colleagues to get the download sorted and then the stunned silence closely followed by unbridled joy as they scrolled up the list and saw where we had been voted.

Twitter was abuzz with housing associations of all shapes and sizes celebrating their positions. 24housing’s decision to do a Top 50 Landlords list really created a positive, feel-good day for the sector.

We live in a world where there are awards and lists for virtually everything. However, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this was the one of those that has had a profound impact on our organisation.

Home Group, like so many housing associations, has undergone tremendous change over the past few years to transform ourselves into a highly efficient, truly customer and client focused organisation that is 100% driven to deliver our core mission – to help our customers and clients to open doors to new opportunities and healthy lives.

There have been tough times and frustrating times, times when one wondered will we ever reach our goal and times when we have wrestled with changes in the outside environment and its impact on our direction.

To be honest, we still have those times, but they are far fewer and farther apart. We’re getting things right more often and we have a clear roadmap to success.

Throughout this time, it is the strength, resilience, creativity and optimism of our staff that have driven us forward.

To be voted the Number 1 Landlord in the UK was a matter of pride for me as captain of the ship, but for colleagues it was an external ringing endorsement of their remarkable efforts. The flood of emails I received from colleagues at all levels of the business who were buoyed by the news was incredible.
We thought long and hard this year about whether or not to nominate ourselves again, deciding eventually that it wasn’t the thing to do. Colleagues are still enjoying the long tail of positivity that has stemmed from this year as #1 Landlord and we want them to continue to enjoy it.

What I would say to any organisations that are considering it is – YES, definitely, you really must, if not for you then for your hard-working colleagues who have the chance to be recognised for everything that they do.

I wish every association the very best of luck in this year’s process. I may look a little enviously at the winner, but only for a moment. We all do amazing work and we all deserve recognition. Long may that continue.

So, now it’s time to get your nominations in for this year’s Top 50 list. Remember, it is open to everyone but if you wish to enter your own organisation, you must nominate two fellow housing providers as well.

Please send your entries to no later than Monday, 18 August.
