Get On Plus participant Jo-Lee Reynolds receives her certificate
Bexhill residents who completed a ‘life changing’ course have been celebrating their achievements.
Participants of AmicusHorizon’s ‘Get On Plus’ programme were presented with certificates on Friday (11 July) at the Bexhill Museum.
Get On Plus provides training courses and workshops for local low waged and unemployed people. It helps them build their confidence and skills to move into volunteering and paid work.
A total of 36 people took part in either an informal taster session or one of five short courses offered through the Get On Plus programme, which is funded by the Big Lottery.
The short courses include ‘Want That Job’ which offers useful tips on finding work, and help with interview techniques and creating a CV.
Participant Jo-Lee Reynolds, who completed this module, said: "I had no confidence whatsoever. It was a big deal for me even coming here to begin with. But now my confidence level is so high. It’s been such a great experience; I’d definitely recommend it to everybody. "
Another module, called ‘Make IT work for you’, teaches basic computer skills. It shows participants how to apply for a job online and offers them help using programmes such as ‘Word’.
Personal development tutor Patsy Solanki said: "It’s a privilege to work on this project. People go in a very short space of time from not understanding what their life is about to finding and achieving goals. They win lots of little personal battles and actually make major changes in their lives."
Jocelyn Tilbrook, Senior Programme Co-ordinator in Community Development at AmicusHorizon, said: "We run these informal courses with the help of our trained volunteer mentors. It’s amazing to see the positive transformation in people in just six weeks. It’s great that Get On Plus is helping people gain confidence and skills, and leaving them feeling ready to move forward and take up opportunities that are open to them."
The next Get On Plus course is due to take place in St Leonards in September.
