Coronation Street actor Anthony Cotton has urged staff at social landlord Riverside to become part of a global community, in a video message to raise awareness of gay and lesbian issues in the workplace.

The actor, who plays Underworld machinist Sean Tully and who starred in the ground-breaking series 'Queer as Folk', delivered his message at one of a week-long series of events across Riverside aimed at spreading the word about its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) staff group.

Thomas Downey-Parkes, from Riverside’s homeownership division, hosted a session for colleagues on the importance of tolerance and understanding at work, and arranged the special message from Corrie favourite Sean.

Mr Downey-Parkes said: “I met Anthony at a special event at Downing Street a couple of years ago, which focussed on LGBT charities and celebrated those who work to promote equality.

"I’m passionate about stamping out homophobic hate crime and do all I can to promote tolerance. Despite the huge steps forward in terms of legislation, we still have some way to go towards a truly tolerant society.

“Colleagues gathered for lunch and took part in a fun quiz. We also watched films about how the likes of Stonewall and other campaigners have pushed to change the laws on sexuality throughout the decades. And the message from Anthony was a great way to end the event.”
As a Stonewall Top 100 employer, the 50,000-home provider says that it continually works to ensure that people can be themselves at work.
