Rubbish amnesty in Birkenhead Rubbish amnesty in Birkenhead

Housing Association Magenta Living, ran a rubbish amnesty in the River Streets, North Birkenhead, last week to combat the growing issue of fly-tipping and littering.

Magenta Living provided residents with a large skip and volunteers to assist the removal of unwanted bulky items such as mattresses, sofas, fridges and old furniture. The campaign also encouraged the recycling of goods wherever possible in order to reduce landfill site waste.

This rubbish amnesty is part of an ongoing initiative driven by Magenta Living’s newly appointed Neighbourhood Response Officer (NRO), Carl Murphy. Known locally as ‘Our Carl’, he is responsible for keeping the River Streets neighbourhood clean and safe. He is working closely with residents helping them to overcome any barriers to disposing of their waste properly.

Carl says: “I’m really pleased to be working in this area. The residents have welcomed me and they are appreciative of what we are trying to do. Some people didn’t have household wheelie bins so I’ve sorted this out, so now they can easily get rid of their weekly waste. I’m also looking forward to sharing my horticultural knowledge with residents so we can add a ‘splash of colour’ to their gardens. I want to do all I can to help them improve their living space and immediate environment.”

Maureen Davies, Environmental Services Manager at Magenta Living, says: “Our rubbish clearing amnesty day has been a real success. Residents actively embraced the opportunity to utilise the skip, making sure their streets were clear of waste.”

“We recognise that Wirral Borough Council is dealing with some tough decisions regarding street cleaning schedules, so as the biggest registered housing provider in Wirral we are doing what we can to support the Council and communities in our attempt to keep streets and neighbourhoods a clean and safe place to be.”
