Two summer play schemes have been rescued thanks to the hard work of the Umbrella Group – a team of local Wirral residents who are trying to make their community a better place.

Formed over five years ago, The Umbrella Group meets monthly at Magenta Living’s offices to discuss issues affecting residents across the Wirral. After discovering that two play schemes were under threat due to funding issues, the Umbrella Group took action to successfully apply for a lottery grant totalling almost £10,000.

As a result, two free play schemes; one in Eastham and one in Prenton Dell, will be going ahead this summer for 6 to 13 year olds. Delivered by the Wirral Play Council, all play workers will be DBS checked and highly trained with first aid skills.

Running over four weeks, from 21st July to 15th August, children will have the opportunity to get involved in sports, arts and crafts, parachute games, talent shows, dance, den building plus many more exciting activities.

Morning and afternoon sessions are planned between 10am – 1pm and 1pm – 3pm, which will not only help parents with childcare issues, but it will also give children a chance to play and learn new skills in a safe environment.

The Umbrella Group, which consists of around 40 local individuals, regularly give up their time to meet and discuss ways to tackle issues like community safety, support and welfare. Magenta Living simply facilitates these meetings and encourages collaborative working with other external community resources and partners.

Adam Woodcook, Community Resource Co-ordinator at Magenta Living says: “We gave the Umbrella Group a helping hand with applying for lottery funding, but the hard work they do should not be underestimated. They are dedicated and passionate about making Wirral a great place to live, and we fully support everything they are trying to achieve.”

Held during the school holidays, both play schemes are free to attend, and there’s no need to book:
