Three families who have just moved into brand new rural homes in Cromhall, Gloucestershire, found they have everything they need right on their doorstep. That’s because their new homes form part of a development at Lygon Court which also includes a village shop and Post Office, giving a new meaning to ‘just popping to the shop’.

The £650,000 development sees the Cromhall community secure the future of its village shop after 20 years of being housed in temporary accommodation.

Merlin’s Development Manager, Peter Crouch said: “We wanted to do our bit for the Cromhall community. We already had a number of homes in the village so understand how important rural housing is, but also the issues that come with it.

“People living in rural homes need local services, shops and a community hub to stop them from becoming isolated and cut off – this development provides this.”

Miss Stevens who recently moved in said: “My little boy Charlie goes to school in Tortworth. I’m living so much closer than I was, the school run is a matter of minutes and so much easier now. The people in the shop have been so welcoming too, it feels like home already.”

Chair of South Gloucestershire Council’s Adults and Housing Committee Cllr Matthew Riddle said: “The council has been a committed and enthusiastic supporter of this project and I am hugely pleased to see these new homes finally occupied and the new shop and Post Office open for business.

“As a council we are very clear in our ambition to support our rural communities, through measures such as the provision of good quality affordable housing, and this project underlines our commitment to this.

“Post Offices are often the cornerstone of rural villages such as Cromhall and I’m also particularly pleased to see that the villagers now have a permanent home for theirs. My congratulations to all those involved in bringing this excellent scheme to completion.”

Local housing association, Merlin Housing Society, worked in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council to bring the village’s dream to life and save the community’s shop from an unknown future. The council donated the land and gave Merlin £100,000 toward the build, and Merlin funded the rest.
