Leanne Benfold collecting her award
Stockport Homes’ customer Leanne Benfold has been named ‘Inspirational Tenant / Resident of the Year’ at the Housing Heroes awards. The winners were announced at a ceremony hosted by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson at Manchester Central on Monday 23 June.
Leanne has won this award for the time and commitment she has given to volunteering at Penny Lane Pantry, the not-for-profit community-led food store based at Lancashire Hill in Stockport.
As one of the original volunteers at the Pantry, which provides affordable, good quality food to its members, she has been integral to making the project a success.
Leanne has grown in confidence and is looking forward to returning to work when her youngest child goes to school. With the support of staff at Stockport Homes she is completing food hygiene and computing courses. With these under her belt, she’ll be an excellent candidate for a host of future job opportunities.
Leanne said, “I’m delighted to have been chosen as ‘Inspirational Tenant / Resident of the Year’ – it was such a shock! I love working at the Pantry, not only has it has provided me with training courses and work experience, it has given me my confidence back and changed my life completely.”
Roger Phillips, Chair of Stockport Homes' Board said, “Leanne is an amazing ambassador for Penny Lane Pantry, promoting it in the local community and
beyond. She is a very enthusiastic and hardworking volunteer and has made such a difference to other residents’ lives as well as her own.”
Martin Hilditch, Acting Editor of Inside Housing, said, “The standard of entries for the Housing Heroes Awards hit new heights this year. All of our entrants can be truly proud of everything that they have achieved in the past 12 months. Housing professionals are carrying out fantastic work to build and sustain communities across the UK. We had more than 200 entries this year and it was incredibly tough whittling that down to a shortlist, quite apart from picking a winner. Huge congratulations to everyone who entered.”
