Hanover’s Be Wise service claims £2.6 million for residents

A national housing provider for the over 55s has helped residents claim an impressive £2.6 million.

Hanover Housing Association’s Be Wise service provides practical assistance to residents to maximise their incomes, save money with their energy bills, receive help with adaptations to their homes, and have contents insurance designed for their particular circumstances.

Hanover originally set a target of improving residents’ finances to the tune of £1m However, just 18 months into the campaign, over £ 2.6 millionof savings have been achieved through increased income from benefits to which residents are entitled, and savings through switching energy tariffs or supplier.

To achieve this goal, Hanover employed specialist financial rights and energy advisers who have been taking the programme out to estates.  They explain welfare reforms and how residents may be affected.  Fully confidential benefit checks are offered, along with the opportunity to discuss entitlement.  The organisation’s in-house energy adviser helps residents to get the best deal from their energy supplier and/or help with switching.

During a recent assessment, Hanover resident Betty-Jo received £1,800 in savings after Hanover’s energy efficiency advisor, Nick Mills, discovered a transposed meter at her property.

Nick said: “To confirm that her meter was transposed, I conducted a load test on her electricity meter. A load test involves taking both a day and night reading from the meter and then turning on electrical appliances that consume a lot of electricity – the idea being to get the meter readings to increase within a short space of time.

“Because Miss Johnson has an Economy 7 meter, it should show that any electricity consumed within the conventional daytime period is attributed to her day rate. However, because the meter was transposed, the night time consumption was actually being charged at the daytime rate.”
