PENNINE Housing 2000 apprentice Nathan Hunter is officially a “Star” after winning a prize in the North Halifax Star’s Awards.

Nathan, 18, landed the award after his Outstanding Individual award in not only turning his back on negative influences and earning himself an apprenticeship but becoming a mentor for other young people in his community.

After starting as an unpaid volunteer with Pennine’s fencing programme in Todmorden and then in Mixenden, his enthusiasm and dedication eventually earned him a two-year apprenticeship and the chance to carve out a career.

In his spare time, he volunteers at Mixenden Activity Centre as a peer mentor, where he helps to deliver activity sessions and engaging with young people.

And Nathan was delighted to have been recognised.

He said: “It came as a complete shock as I didn’t even know I’d been put in for the award, but I’m very pleased to have won.

“I could have definitely gone down a different route but this just goes to prove that if you are willing to work hard then you can achieve what you want.

“I’m improving my skills all the time and I’m enjoying my volunteering work. This award is the icing on the cake.”

Dean McGowan, Nathan’s mentor and Fencing Supervisor, added: “Nathan deserves all the praise he gets because he’s a credit to us.

“He works hard whatever the weather, never complains, and is coming on in leaps and bounds.

“I’m delighted that he’s got this award and I hope it acts as motivation for him and the rest of the lads.”
