AmicusHorizon's DIY SOS scheme recognised with award
The achievements of AmicusHorizon’s hugely successful DIY SOS scheme have been recognised with an award for adult learning.
The popular project teaches unemployed and low waged volunteers practical home maintenance skills, including wallpapering and floor laying.
These skills are then put into practice at places like village halls and communal gardens, helping to benefit local community venues and people.
The project picked up the Learning in Families and Communities Project Award in the South East as part of Adult Learners' Week, which is taking place between 14 - 20 June.
The housing association received a certificate and a £500 voucher towards further learning opportunities at the Adult Learners’ Week Awards, held at London Canal Museum on Tuesday (10 June).
Vanessa Porter, Senior Community Worker at AmicusHorizon, said: "We’re delighted to have won this award. It’s fantastic that the DIY SOS project has been able to help some of the most vulnerable people in East Sussex gain valuable skills, qualifications and confidence. And it’s helped improve communal areas and buildings to benefit local people."
DIY SOS has helped brighten 10 places across the county, including Bexhill on Sea and Hastings.
Since it started in January 2012, over 200 people have attended either taster sessions or the DIY SOS course. All participants are presented with certificates of achievement, home decorating kits and vouchers to use at Brewers Decorating Store.
One learner on a previous scheme said: "I learnt new skills and plan to decorate my house using the vouchers and decorating kit. My confidence has risen and continues to rise; it’s early days but I’m much more enthusiastic than before."
DIY SOS is run by AmicusHorizon and funded by the Big Lottery Fund. The scheme runs until December 2014.
