Lime Grove and Lichen Grove on the Raffles Estate in Carlisle recently had a much needed facelift, much to the delight of the residents there.

Locals Mrs Robson and Mrs Gillespie joined the Riverside Your Place team to celebrate their newly spruced up gardens.  Pavements have been cleared of moss and benches replaced but the biggest difference has come from the new planting scheme.

Chris Tilbury, Your Place Team Leader, said “Good gardens improve neighbourhoods as a place to live and work.   Plants can change the look and feel of an area creating places where communities and individuals come together.”

Andy Nugent, Clean Team Senior Operative, said:  “It’s great to see the results of a project like this, especially when residents are so appreciative of the work we’ve done”

The Your Place Team’s job is now to keep the neighbourhood looking good.  Last year they spent 298 man hours in Raffles alone and it’s not just weeds they remove.   “We clean graffiti, scrub away unwanted moss and find ourselves removing much larger goods too.”

Figures show that last year the Your Place team walked 160 miles around Carlisle litter picking.  On these walks they removed 164 tonnes of general waste filling 44 skips.   54 trolleys were removed as well as 123 white goods and 312 bin bags.  A further 14 skips were filled with 42 tonnes of garden waste.

Andy concluded “One of the most enjoyable parts of our job is meeting the residents and seeing first-hand the difference a bit of hard work can make.”
