Homes for doctors, nursing staff, teachers and social workers are being made more affordable by a leading London housing provider in an attempt to stop frontline public service workers being forced out of the capital by rising property costs.

Viridian Housing has made three central London properties available for key workers, which will provide homes at 'affordable rent' – around 75% to 85% of market rents.

Helen Graham House, Goldsmiths House and Park House, all in high-demand central London locations, are the latest sites to become available after the re-launch of Robbins Hall, in Enfield, in December.

The news comes as rents continue to soar across London, seeing rental costs eating up more than half of the average salary. Figures show that the average rent across London is set to surge by 32% from £1,854 a month to £2,700 in six years.

Viridian resident Blanca Romero, who lives at Park House in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, explained: “Our monthly rent is what most people pay per week in this area.”

She added: “As more and more areas of London become unaffordable, there is a real danger of vital young professionals being driven out to live in outer London.”

Mark Sullivan, operations manager for hostels at Viridian Housing, said:“We hope this announcement from Viridian Housing will be a welcome relief to those affected.

“We receive a large number of enquiries from single professionals hoping to stay at all our properties in Central London, so we are very glad to be able to extend our offer to key workers. They are a sector of the workforce that do a fantastic job for society and are in great need of the extra support that our hostels only provided for students until now.”

The properties for rent, starting at £134 per week for a single room in Zone 1, including most bills, and are close to local transport links. Contracts are flexible and don’t need large deposits.

Helen Graham House (pictured) and Goldsmiths House are located within a short distance from the University College Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital.

Park House is within quick access to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Cromwell Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital and the Royal Marsden, as well as most of the medical teaching hospitals at Imperial College. These properties are the ideal base for key workers currently employed at any of these NHS trusts and are looking for reasonable rent in central London locations.

Helen Graham House is situated in a traditional red brick building in the heart of Bloomsbury with Goldsmith House situated within walking distance near Regents Park. Park House is also based in zone 1, in Earls Court.
