An affordable housing scheme in Snedshill in Telford is providing a mix of employment and training opportunities for local people.

Sanctuary Group is developing the site in Furnace Road to create 23 affordable new homes in a £2.5 million scheme part-funded by the Homes and Communities Agency.

The new homes are being built by Sanctuary Group’s contractors Partner Construction Ltd and will provide much-needed apartments and family houses for rent and shared ownership in this area of Telford.

The housing development is also providing a range of opportunities for local people in terms of jobs and training.

Nineteen year old Ryan Carroll is one of those gaining invaluable experience on the Furnace Road site. Ryan is a bricklaying apprentice, now doing a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Bricklaying at Birmingham Metropolitan College in Stourbridge following a Diploma in Engineering and Technology at Telford College of Arts & Technology (TCAT). He is currently working alongside qualified bricklayers on site, gaining practical experience to support his classroom-based learning.

John Flaherty, 66, from Shifnal, has also found employment on the site. John is an experienced fork-lift driver who has worked in the construction industry for many years. He will be working at the Furnace Road development until the project completes.

Jim Wright, Sanctuary Group’s project manager, said: “Sanctuary Group is committed to offering employment and training through its development programme, and we are delighted to see local people of all ages working at the Furnace Road site. We will be working with Partner Construction to offer further opportunities as the scheme progresses.”

Angela Garrard, Business Development Manager from Partner Construction Ltd, added: “We share Sanctuary’s commitment to providing employment opportunities for local people and to offering work experience via local colleges to encourage students to consider a career in construction.

“Partner Construction has been pleased to welcome Ryan and John to the site team and we hope to provide further employment and training opportunities over the coming months.”

The new homes at the Furnace Road development are due for completion in December 2014.
