The total transformation of a West Bromwich estate has been shortlisted for one of the top awards in the housing industry.

Resident-led Lyng Community Association (LCA) has been named on the shortlist of the 2014 Housing Excellence awards in the ‘Best Regeneration Scheme’ category.

It’s recognition of the work done by the LCA, which has rejuvenated the Lyng estate as part of a partnership between Sandwell Council and Barrett Homes.

Since a group of pioneering local people fought for the regeneration of the run-down Lyng estate and set up the LCA, a multi-million pound scheme has seen the original 1960s properties demolished and replaced by 200 new-build affordable homes, as well as 250 for private sale.

The project replaced decaying maisonettes, flats, tunnel walkways and underground car parks with modern houses, complete with gardens, as well as two-bedroom flats. A popular new children’s play park has been created and there’s plenty of public open space for residents to enjoy.

The work began in 1999 and is now nearing completion. The final 10 new LCA homes will be handed over, ready for their new tenants, by October 2015.

LCA Chair Wendy Bodenham has been involved in the project since the start. She said: “It’s fantastic to receive such high-profile recognition for the hard work that many of us have put in over the years. We’re really proud of what we’ve achieved so far.
“We’ve got a wonderful community here and wanted to keep that together. I’m delighted that we’ve created social housing of excellent quality and transformed the Lyng into a desirable place to live.”

LCA is one of five housing associations shortlisted in the ‘Best Regeneration Scheme’ category of the 11th annual Housing Excellence Awards.

The 2014 winners will be decided by an independent panel of industry experts and announced on Wednesday May 14th, when housing’s elite converge on Lancashire County Cricket Ground for the awards evening.
