Housing association Radian last week sent seven of its young tenants for a peek behind the scenes at Microsoft's London HQ.
The tenants, aged 15-22, were at the free event to pick up tips about working in the IT industry and increase their employment prospects.
The trip was organised in partnership with Slenky, a website tailored to inspire 13 to 24-year-olds using social networking to connect them with creative industries and give them the opportunity to meet experts in their favoured career field.
Bill Shaw, Radian’s head of community investment, said: “The response from residents to this opportunity was very enthusiastic – more than 50 answered our invitation.
“Industry insights like this are incredibly valuable to building a career so we’re looking to develop more events like this with Slenky in the future, such as at Sky TV and IBM. It’s all part of our commitment to helping young people develop their prospects for gaining employment and training. Watch this space!”
As well as providing an exclusive look at Microsoft’s latest technology, the event explained life and careers at the firm; what employers are looking for; competencies, skills and techniques; CV and interview tactics; and networking and personal branding.
One of those who made the trip was GCSE student Spencer Murray, 15, from Southampton, who was in one of the teams which jointly won the design challenge.
He said: “The day was very interesting and informative, glancing over a few topics in the world of business like marketing, whilst also looking at the direction that Microsoft is taking in the technology industry.
“I would like to thank Radian for giving me the chance to meet some of the members of Microsoft and understand more about careers within the company and what it is like to work for such a well-known technology company.”
