A Salford housing association is leading the way in trialling a new type of party cavity wall insulation which is set to be the first of its kind to completely eliminate heat loss and transfer.
The pilot project will see the new mineral wool insulation fitted to separating walls between terraced and semi-detached houses in City West Housing Trust’s properties – saving customers up to £90 a year on their energy bills.
The housing association, which owns and manages 14,600 homes in Salford, is undertaking the project with Knauf Insulation using the company’s ECOSE Technology, which creates insulation using formaldehyde free binder technology and naturally occurring and recycled raw materials.
If the pilot is successful, customers could save between £60 and £90 a year on their energy bills, and household carbon emissions will be reduced by between a third and half a tonne per home, per year. The performance of the insulation is being monitored by Leeds Metropolitan University and the Mineral Wool Insulation Manufacturers Association (MIMA), alongside Knauf Insulation.
Garry Vaughan, Head of Supply Chain and Sustainability at City West, said: “Through our commitment to the green agenda we are ensuring our properties can be as energy efficient as possible and offer value for money for our customers.
“The party wall insulation builds on the work we have already carried out with our external wall insulation programme which has already helped 66 households to cut their energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions. We look forward to continuing our work in this area.”
Nick Ralph, Technical spokesperson for MIMA, said: “We really appreciate having this exciting opportunity to monitor this revolutionary new type of party cavity walls insulation with City West. The measure will soon be widely available to help all begin saving on their energy bills”.
Matthew Prowse, Application Development Manager for Knauf Insulation said: “We have been working with City West to carry out trials and confirm the savings that can be made by insulating party walls. Although we are awaiting the final results, initial tests have shown that the insulation completely eliminates heat loss and this will be reflected in reduced energy bills.”
