Magenta Living deploys CSI style tactics to deal with fly-tipping

Angry residents have recently reached boiling point over the growth of fly-tipping across the borough, so Magenta Living have stepped up their ‘Trash Tracker’ campaign to tackle the problem head on.

This type of anti social behavior will hopefully be wiped out by Trash Tracker, which aims to change attitudes using CSI style tactics. Once illegal dumping has taken place, Magenta Living’s Trash Tracker team move quickly to cordon off the scene while a full investigation gets underway.

The abandoned waste is photographed and the evidence becomes a focal point for door to door discussions, asking residents to step forward with trash tracking information. To date, a number of investigations have proved very successful, serving as both a clean-up exercise by guilty parties and a deterrent to other residents.

Magenta Living is keen to stress that Trash Tracker is not a quick fix solution, and without the help of the local community, this initiative would not be making a difference.

Maureen Davies, Environmental Services Manager at Magenta Living, says: “We are using Trash Tracker in our determination to show that we will not tolerate fly-tipping in our communities. Heavy fines can be issued for fly-tipping, but with smarter working it is possible to prevent and reduce further problems”.

Allan Dollery, Chair of Prenton Dell Residents Association, says: “At the end of the day, local people are victims, offenders and witnesses so it’s up to us to support campaigns like this and stand up against the minority of irresponsible people that don’t dispose of their rubbish properly.”

“Watching the Trash Tracker team in action really is just like the TV Programme CSI especially the methods they use to investigate the waste. I didn’t know that unique codes on goods can even be tracked back to the suppliers it’s amazing the methods they use.”
