A grandmother-of-three is enjoying a new lease of life after Liverpool Housing Trust (LHT) helped her land a job.
Jean O’Brien, aged 60, of Kirkby, had been looking for work since July 2012 when her previous role as a secretary came to an end.
Being unemployed had knocked her confidence, so Jean signed up to LHT’s Talent Pool, a project which helps to match tenants to job and training opportunities.
Jean, who’s been an LHT tenant for three years, said: “After being out of work for a couple of years, I was beginning to lose confidence and starting to feel anxious about how I would pay the bills.
“I then received an email about LHT Talent Pool, so I put my name down.”
After being sent information about My Work Search – an IT programme that matches people’s skills to job vacancies – Jean attended a one-day training session run by LHT’s regeneration team.
After being shown how to use the system and given support with her CV, Jean found work just two weeks later. She is now working as a full-time audio typist.
Jean added: “I was over the moon when I got the call. I feel like a heavy weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I am getting my confidence back and life is looking good.
“I love the buzz of being part of the workforce again – being part of a team with great colleagues.
“I would encourage anyone looking for work to sign up to the programme, as it gives you access to multiple employer websites and agencies and a better chance of finding employment. It was the best thing I did.”
Siobhan Rose, regeneration officer for LHT, part of Symphony Housing Group, said: “Jean is a real inspiration and we are delighted that she has found work. This is just one of the support services we offer and we’d love to hear from other tenants who are interested in finding out more.
“We understand that unemployment can have an impact on people’s confidence and wellbeing. From this, one of our priorities is to help our tenants into employment or training.”
LHT and Symphony Housing Group are running a major initiative across the North West called ‘Works For Me’, which aims to support tenants into work and training.
