Housing association AmicusHorizon teamed up with ten of London’s leading social housing providers to deliver a major youth conference.

Over 800 people attended the Momentum Youth Conference at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls on Wednesday 9 April. The event aimed to showcase the talents of young people across the capital, including singers, dancers and comedians.

The youth conference also included an educational side. A number of stalls were set up offering information and advice on employment, apprenticeships, volunteering and work experience opportunities.

Elevating Success - a training and personal development company - took on six volunteers to organise the event, with one volunteer now being offered a job there.

And a number of workshops were also put on by local colleges and other organisations, including one advising ‘how to be an entrepreneur’.

Vicky Ongei, 19, a volunteer on the day and AmicusHorizon Youth Forum Member, felt it was important that housing providers looked beyond bricks and mortar to improving residents’ employment prospects.

She said: "This event has provided many employment opportunities, further training and apprenticeship schemes. Young people face so many barriers when trying to enter the world of work. So for housing providers to organise this youth conference, bringing so many opportunities under one roof, can only help."

The event was hosted by Chris Preddie OBE, who became the first ‘community champion’ for the charity Crimestoppers. The headline act was singer and rapper Donae’o.

Bozlur Rashid, Resident Involvement Officer at AmicusHorizon, said: "This event has definitely gone from strength to strength.

It’s great that we’re able to provide this platform for young people to engage, not only with their landlords, but the rest of the country. One million people logged onto You Tube to watch clips from Momentum 2012 and we hope everybody took away something positive from this year’s event."

The Momentum Youth Conference was sponsored by AmicusHorizon, Croydon Churches Housing Association, Elevating Success, Hexagon, Hyde Plus, L&Q, Lewisham Council, Lewisham Homes, Moat, Orbit South, Riverside and Viridian.
