Sanctuary Group is celebrating the completion of four affordable new homes at its housing development in Rectory Road in Stoke-on-Trent.

These new properties, built by construction specialist Seddon, are part of a wider scheme in North Shelton which will see Sanctuary deliver a total of 36 affordable new homes in a £4million project in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, with investment from the Homes and Communities Agency. The new homes in Rectory Road are all two-bedroom houses, available on an affordable rental basis.

To mark the completion of this much-needed affordable housing, Sanctuary Group invited Councillor Majid Khan and members of North Shelton Community Partnership (NSCP) along to see the new homes before residents moved in.

Following a tour of the completed properties, the visitors then moved on to North Shelton Community Centre in Rectory Road where they enjoyed some welcome refreshments.

They also saw the improvement work at the centre completed by Sanctuary Group and Seddon last autumn while working nearby. This included painting work inside the centre plus some planting outside and also the creation of a colourful graffiti wall.

Sanctuary Group’s project manager Jane Johnson said: “These newly completed properties in Rectory Road will provide much-needed affordable homes for four families in this part of Stoke-on-Trent. We feel that this, combined with the improvement work at the local community centre and a further nine homes set to complete over the next few weeks in North Shelton, is great news for the area and it was fantastic to be joined by Cllr Khan and the local residents association as we celebrated these latest completions.”

Councillor Janine Bridges Stoke-on-Trent City Council cabinet member for housing, neighbourhoods and commission, said: “These properties are the first of a number of new, modern homes that are driving up living standards in the area. As part of master-planning work to bring improvements to North Shelton, a number of sub-standard homes have been cleared, and it is great that affordable new build, that meets the needs of local residents, is being created so quickly in their place.

“This scheme is being delivered as a partnership with the council and a responsible social landlord, and by removing poor quality homes and providing land suitable for redevelopment, this is an alternative way that the council is supporting new build homes in the city.”

Ian Calder, Regional Manager at Seddon, said: “We are delighted to have delivered these new affordable homes in Stoke-on-Trent as part of our framework agreement with Sanctuary Group.  Not only have we provided our construction expertise, but have offered training opportunities to local people and have been putting back into the community through the improvement works to the community centre and other projects in and around North Shelton.”

The final nine properties in the North Shelton scheme (one-bedroom flats in Snow Hill, three-bedroom houses in Grove Place and a further three-bedroom house in Rectory Road) are all due to be completed by the end of April.
