The North East's newest - and largest - housing group launched today.

Thirteen Group has officially started business after being formed by the merger of Fabrick Housing Group and Vela Group.

The group owns and manages more than 32,000 homes from an area spanning North Tyneside to York, will have a turnover of around £140 million a year, and is one of the 10 largest employers in the North East. It is also in the top 25 housing providers of its kind in the country.

Alison Thain, chief executive of the Thirteen Group, said: “We are thrilled to announce the beginning of Thirteen Group. Merging makes us a single, stronger organisationthat has the scale and collective expertise to do and achieve much more.”

The new group will also include partner companies, Erimus Housing, Tees Valley Housing, Housing Hartlepool and Tristar Homes - who will remain as separate successful organisations in their own right.

Residents will not directly be affected; their landlord will continue to operate as usual - but with an improved quality and extent of services. Consultation, including with residents and other stakeholders, was carried out as part of the process.

The move means expertise, resources and costs can be shared, achieving savings without reducing services and allowing the landlords to focus on the needs of their tenants and neighbourhoods.

Plans are also being developed to create Thirteen Care and Support, a new housing support arm, bringing together the services of the supported housing team of Tees Valley Housing and Norcare, the specialist Tyneside-based charity which is currently part of Fabrick Housing Group.

Alison Thain added: “At the very heart of Thirteen is the knowledge that when we’re willing to look at life differently we are able to create genuine opportunities. We pride ourselves on being passionate about what we do, because we believe making a difference is worth the time and energy it takes to achieve.”
