A family-run Salford firm is “shouting from the rooftops” after being appointed to supply roofing services to Pendleton Together after successfully bidding for the contract worth in excess of £1 million.

Swinton-based Walker Roofing was awarded the lucrative contract by Keepmoat, a member of the consortium delivering the £650 million regeneration of Pendleton, following a competitive tendering process.

Welcoming the news, Walker Roofing managing director Malcolm Walker said: “We are delighted to be working with Keepmoat on the regeneration of Pendleton.

“This is a significant contract win which will result in considerable growth for Walker Roofing. It is encouraging to see local businesses being given the opportunity to secure such large contracts close to where they are based.

“We are pleased to be sharing our success with our sub-contract roofers who are all local to this area. We will also be recruiting new apprentices from the Salford area who are looking to begin a new career in the roofing industry.”

Walker Roofing, who started on site in December 2013, are installing roof coverings to newly built houses and re-roofing hundreds of social housing properties which are being refurbished in the area.

As a result of their work with Pendleton Together, Walker Roofing has appointed one apprentice and is currently interviewing candidates for a second position.

Frank Mondino, Keepmoat Area Director for the North West Region, said: “Pendleton Together is committed to supporting the local economy and employing local companies, where possible, to work on the regeneration of Pendleton.

“We welcome Walker Roofing on board. Not only will Walker Roofing be carrying out much needed investment to the homes of local people, Pendleton Together is able provide a major boost to Salford’s economy, support the local SME agenda and provide apprenticeship opportunities for those starting out in the construction industry.”

Walker Roofing is also supporting the Pendleton Together Timebank, an initiative which sees contractors working on the project bank volunteering time to work on local community projects. Through the volunteering hours Walker Roofing have already pledged they have replaced the leaky flat roof on Salford Arts Theatre.

The Pendleton Together consortium also includes social landlord Together Housing Group and Salford City Council. The regeneration will see more than 1,600 new energy efficient homes built and more than 1,250 existing council-owned properties improved.
