Work gets underway on the second phase of the Banbury Foyer project Work gets underway on the second phase of the Banbury Foyer project

Work is underway on the second phase of improvements to a foyer for young people in the centre of Banbury.

Leading housing and care provider Sanctuary Group completed the first phase of work at Banbury Foyer in May 2012 in a £650k project to improve the communal areas of the premises. This included renovation of the reception area, offices, storage rooms and laundry, a newly-built communal lounge and IT suite for the young residents, and the provision of a garden area and bike racks. Two new bedsits were also created.

Phase 2 of the project will see existing flats at the foyer remodelled into 25 self-contained bedsits, each with en suite bathroom, kitchen area and bed-sitting room. There will also be a new two-bedroom flat, emergency bed space and extra storage created in this second phase of work.

The £1 million project will be built by Sanctuary Group’s contractors CLC and is due to complete in August 2014.

As well as providing much-needed supported living accommodation for young people in Banbury, the development will also offer training and employment opportunities during construction, with the creation of one new apprenticeship and the possibility of work experience placements.

Jonathan Mullins, Sanctuary Group’s head of development for the area, said: “The improvement work in Phase 1 of the project completely transformed the communal areas of the foyer, and we hope to have a similar impact in this second phase, as outdated flats are converted into new bedsits. There is a significant demand for accommodation of this type in Banbury and we are proud to be playing our part in providing young people with purpose-built high quality homes where they can live in a safe and supported environment.”

Cherwell District Council’s lead member for housing, Councillor Debbie Pickford, said:  “Cherwell District Council has worked closely with Sanctuary Group to refurbish this young persons’ accommodation and ensure further housing opportunities for young people. We welcome this newly redesigned building which offers those with housing difficulties a chance to develop their tenancy skills, and prepares them to move on to more fixed accommodation. I want to thank our partners, Sanctuary Group, for their continued support and hope we can work together again.”

Ian Croshaw, Divisional Manager from CLC, said: “We are proud to have been awarded the second phase on this project, having witnessed the positive impact Phase 1 has had on the residents. We are also pleased to see all the new amenities installed being used to their full potential. ”
