First tenants benefit from multi-million pound energy efficiency project

Work has begun on a multi-million pound energy efficiency project that could see The Gateshead Housing Company and Home Group tenants fuel bills reduce by hundreds of pounds a year.

Mears Group have successfully completed a pilot of the scheme which will see over 600 homes in Gateshead have external wall insulation carried out. Two semi-detached properties formed the pilot, with scaffolding donning the homes for two weeks whilst the insulation was applied. The before and after contrast is impressive, with a vast improvement in the appearance thanks to the Wetherby render system. Over the coming winter months the real benefits to tenants can be realised; with an expected 40% reduction in fuel bills.

The two housing providers secured joint funding of the work, which is due to be completed by July 2014.

Gateshead resident Miss Curry was the first resident to receive the work carried out to her home and she said "I am very happy with the work, I can tell a big difference with the heating, the house is staying warm for longer. Everyone who comes into the street has commented on how well they look, a big thank you to everyone involved."

Colin Middlemass, Managing Director of Mears Group, said: "We are delighted to be involved in such a fundamental project that aims to assist in the reduction of fuel bills and keep homes warm. Hopefully residents will see the benefits of the scheme for years to come."

Neil Bouch, The Gateshead Housing Company's Director of Customers and Communities, said: "The securing of £5.4 of funding to improve hundreds of local homes was great news for the borough.

"Working with Home Group on a joint bid for ECO funding means that people will  see improved homes, reduced fuel bills and a significant reduction in carbon emissions in the borough for years to come."

Graham Darby, Home Group head of customer service, said: "We are delighted that these improvements will help our customers see real reductions in their energy bills.

"Some of our customers really struggle with the energy costs in their homes and by working with The Gateshead Housing Company we've been able to pool our resources for the benefit of our customers."
