The start of work at Sanctuary Group’s development in Coningsby Street in Hereford has been welcomed by local partners.

The £1.6m scheme is part of the wider regeneration taking place in Hereford city centre and will see the leading housing and care provider build 10 one-bedroom apartments, with construction specialist Seddon as the contractor and investment from the Homes and Communities Agency.

Due to complete in early 2015, the Coningsby Street development will provide much-needed supported living accommodation in the city centre and will also create a number of job and training opportunities during the construction process.

Sanctuary Group hosted a special event on Friday 14 March to formally mark the start of construction at the site, with a presentation about the scheme at The Courtyard in Edgar Street and a visit to Coningsby Street to see the site first hand.

Councillor Graham Powell from Herefordshire Council was invited to dig the first spade into the ground at the sod cutting ceremony to celebrate this milestone.

Peter Martin, Sanctuary Group director - property, said: “Sanctuary Group has worked closely with Herefordshire Council over a number of years as plans for the wider regeneration of Hereford city centre have evolved and we are proud to be playing such a key part in providing new homes for the city.

“Our development in Coningsby Street symbolises the start of an ambitious scheme which will ultimately provide hundreds of new homes for Hereford. We appreciate what this means to local people and the local economy, and we will be doing everything we can to contribute to this regeneration through our development programme.

“As with all Sanctuary Group developments, this will mean not only new homes but wider benefits through the employment and training opportunities it creates during construction and the local community projects Sanctuary Group and its contractor support.”

Councillor Graham Powell, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, Herefordshire Council, said: “This is an important and significant new residential development within this area of the city.  It demonstrates the council’s commitment to work with partners, like Sanctuary Group, to develop additional housing as part of the city’s overall regeneration plans.  It is especially pleasing that we can combine this with delivering much needed accommodation and support for people who need help to live independently.”

Ian Calder, Regional Manager at Seddon, said: “As part of our framework agreement with Sanctuary Group, we are delighted to be delivering this scheme in Hereford.  Not only will we provide our construction expertise, we will offer training opportunities for local people and will be putting something back into the community by providing local community benefits.”
