AmicusHorizon residents and staff gathered to celebrate women’s achievements
Over 200 AmicusHorizon residents and staff gathered together in Croydon on 8 March to celebrate women’s achievements in the community and the workplace.
Residents aged five to 95 came together for a whole day of workshops, entertainment and powerful speeches to mark International Women’s Day.
The housing association’s event featured motivational speaker Pauline Curtis, AmicusHorizon’s Executive Director of Strategy and External Affairs, Kate Dodsworth, and several members of the Resident Involvement team.
All speakers recognised the enormous progress made in achieving women’s equality and encouraged the audience members to take up the challenge of making further strides. The defining message of the day for women was be proud of your gender and "don’t let others define you, define yourself".
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It also aims to inspire change for greater awareness of women’s equality.
Resident Dawna Hewitt said: "It’s been a fantastic event, not only for the older women but the younger women too. Hopefully it’s inspired them and will help them develop into the women of tomorrow."
Margaret Ashmead, chair of AmicusHorizon’s International Women’s Day planning group, said: "I’m delighted we’ve had such a huge turn out of women from all nationalities, cultures, faith and backgrounds, all enjoying International Women’s Day together!"
Alma Haq, Resident Involvement Manager, said: "I’m thrilled we were able to work with our residents to hold this special event. It was a true team effort with residents and staff being involved in the planning, organising and then hosting the event."
