A housing association has been selected to help develop the aspirations of young social entrepreneurs.

Affinity Sutton is one of 15 organisations picked by charity UnLtd to provide funding and support for young people with visions of bringing about positive change in their communities.

In partnership with Bright Ideas Trust, Affinity Sutton’s Building Future Foundations programme will be focussed within the Greater London area and, depending on what stage an idea is at, will provide access to three separate funding award categories:

  • Try it Awards - Awards of £500 each for young entrepreneurs to trial small scale projects.
  • Do it Awards - Awards of £2,500 each for young entrepreneurs who have advanced their ideas and are at the point of developing and planning their project.
  • Build it Awards - Award of £5,000 available to a young entrepreneur whose provision addresses biggest challenges facing communities and has been in operation for over a year.

In addition to cash funding, comprehensive support will be provided to the young entrepreneurs throughout the process.

Each will be assigned to an employment officer from the 57,000-home provider's Ready2Work team who will develop with them a personal development plan detailing their goals and aspirations.

The Ready2Work team will also assist the young entrepreneurs in maximising their support by signposting to additional resources available, both from Affinity Sutton and externally.

Existing entrepreneurs will provide support and take on a mentor role for the young entrepreneurs, sharing knowledge and advice as well as undertaking a business health check for each.

And a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event will also take place at which existing entrepreneurs will be invited to share their stories and act as panellists to provide support and constructive critique on the young entrepreneur’s business ideas.

Judie Obeya, Affinity Sutton's neighbourhood investment manager, said: “We were absolutely delighted to be selected as one of UnLtd’s fifteen partners to take forward the Building Future Foundations programme.

“Our delivery of the programme will be underpinned by our overarching aim to raise aspirations and build sustainable futures for our young people and the communities in which they live.

Lisa Gagliani, from the Bright Ideas Trust, added: “Bright Ideas Trust have been assisting young people start enterprises for the past five years. We are really pleased to be providing our expertise in the form of training, selection and mentoring for the residents of Affinity Sutton as part of the building future foundations programme.”
