Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of sustainable drainage and water management products, has seen its Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe system utilised by leading property developer Abel Homes.

From the initial design stages, Abel Homes had identified Polypipe products as the ideal choice for the water management needs of the site in Watton, Norfolk, which consists of 80 new Eco Homes.

Polypipe’s water management solutions experts were able to supply an engineered Sustainable Urban Drainage system (SUDs) to compliment the design of a pond included within the development’s plans, providing adequate attenuation in the event of both 1 in 30 year and 1 in 100 year storm events.

As the site is on a slope discharging into an open ditch, 900mm Ridgistorm-XL pipe was selected to overcome the limited space available. The inherent strength of Ridgistorm-XL allowed the required level of soil coverage above the system. The Ridgistorm-XL tank is capable of storing up to 321m³ of stormwater before releasing it in a steady flow rate into the local sewer network. The attenuation system is also designed with a high level overflow which allows excess water discharge into the site’s pond, itself a purpose-built soft SUDs solution, providing adequate drainage during a 1 in 100 year storm event.

Alongside utilising more than 420m of Ridgistorm-XL pipe to create the attenuation tank with 12 runs, Polypipe was also able to use its unique pre-fabrication abilities to create a number of engineered chambers, utilising Ridgistorm-XL in 1500mm diameters, as well as a number of fittings. All of these components were pre-fabricated off-site under controlled conditions at Polypipe’s UK manufacturing facilities, and were based on designs and structural calculations made by Polypipe’s technical design team.

Mark Woods, Technical Manager at Abel Homes, said: “Working with Polypipe on this project has greatly benefited the build. Due to space and time constraints we needed a solution which would have the minimum impact on the site as well the build programme, while also providing excellent drainage performance. Working with Polypipe’s design team from inception was invaluable in achieving this.”

As Ridgistorm-XL is lighter in weight than alternative concrete products, and with the ability to be prefabricated off site, the use of the system reduced both transport costs and build time. The system was able to be joined quickly utilising a sealed system, resulting in much quicker installation times and creating the opportunity for cost savings.

Emma Nicholls, Marketing Communications Manager at Polypipe, added: “By being involved from the very beginning of this project, our water management experts were able to offer a fully engineered solution, while taking all of Abel Homes’ requirements into account. Environmentally friendly housing is a growing area and it was exciting for Polypipe to work with Abel Homes on this type of development.”

A small market town located in the rural Breckland area of Norfolk, Watton is a hub for independent businesses, with its weekly market drawing in shoppers from the surrounding villages.
