County Durham housing association Cestria Community Housing is celebrating after being named as a finalist in a prestigious national procurement awards.

Chester-le-Street-based Cestria is one of six organisations from across the country shortlisted for the GO Procurement Leadership of the Year Award at the National Government Opportunities (GO) Excellence in Public Procurement Awards 2014/15.

The achievement comes less than two years after the association decided to bring its procurement management activity in-house, leading to efficiency savings and more effective and transparent procurement techniques.

Cestria’s Corporate Service Officer Arshia Bhatti, who has led the procurement project, said: “This is a fantastic recognition of progress and achievement for our procurement activity, especially given the record level of competition from across the UK for these Awards.

“While we will not know whether we will go on to win the Award until later this month, even achieving finalist status is a great commendation for all involved.”

The National GO Awards take place on 19 March at the Hilton Metropole Hotel, in Birmingham.

Cestria is up against national organisations such as Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, The National Archives and West London Waste Authority for the Leadership of the Year Award title.

Since 2002, the National GO Awards have been the benchmark by which progress in the multibillion-pound procurement sector has been measured.

Lead judge Grahame Steed said: “This year’s submissions into the National GO Awards demonstrated the incredible breadth and depth of activity, innovation and commitment across the sector.

“The judging panel were impressed by the desire of all shapes and sizes of organisation to make positive change to their approach to procurement.

“Every finalist deserves the recognition that the National GO Awards bring, and we look forward to the presentation ceremony on 19 March in front of the leading influencers and decision makers in this sector.”
