A young Sanctuary Housing resident in Paignton is launching a poster campaign to encourage young people with mental health needs and learning difficulties to get creative.

With the support of Fixers, a charity which helps young people get their voices heard, Katie Sowden wants to gain more backing from local leaders to encourage creative outlets for young people dealing with mental health issues.

The 22-year-old took photographs of key sights across Torbay before asking young artists to add their own touches to the images. The finished posters, which encourage youngsters to take up art, will be displayed in libraries, community centres, schools and GP surgeries around the local area.

Fixers will now be helping Katie to further her message by meeting with local councillors, mental health campaigners and Sarah Wollaston, Conservative MP for Devon.

Katie, who runs a local youth group, said: “I think that young people with mental health issues often don’t get the support they need. Through the volunteer work I’ve done in the past I’ve seen first-hand how much a creative outlet can help.

“The response I got from the young artists was brilliant and I think the posters are looking great. Hopefully they can really encourage young people to try and get creative.

“I want the project to get as much support as possible and the posters should start appearing very soon.”

Sanctuary has provided £60,000 funding to Fixers, matched by £60,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, to support projects for residents in locations across England and Scotland, which are led by young people aged 16 – 25.

Fixers is a charity which supports young people across the UK to take action and change things for the better. The Fixers project has already supported over 11,000 young people to have an authentic voice in their community. Each Fixer is supported to create the resources they need - such as films, websites or print work - to make their chosen project a success.
