Housing provider meets the gold standard for investing in people

A housing provider has been awarded a prestigious accolade in recognition of its commitment to staff development.
Home Group has achieved the Investors in People (IiP) Gold Award by meeting 165 evidence requirements across the organisation.
IiP is a benchmark for best practice in people management, covering business planning, leadership and performance measurement. The gold award reflects the significant improvements and changes which have helped Home Group go above and beyond the Investors in People Standard it achieved in 2011.
Included in these changes was the introduction of new schemes to develop talent and manage performance. IiP assessors highlighted Home Group’s ‘Leadership Pathways’ programme, which offers managers the opportunity to develop and prepare for more senior roles and colleagues to develop as future managers. Evaluation of the first set of colleagues to go through the programme showed that 82% improved their working relationships, 88% took on additional responsibilities or opportunities and 58% have achieved promotions.
Assessors also highlighted the extent to which Home Group’s core values, ‘caring’, ‘commercial’, ‘accountable’ and ‘energised’, were reflected in the way people talked about the organisation and their roles and responsibilities. By giving employees ownership of the values and asking them to decide on the behaviours that were linked to them, Home Group was able to successfully embed these behaviours across the business.
The implementation of a performance-related pay scheme was also seen as key to Home Group’s effective people management. Home Group, which was named the top UK landlord by 24Housing in December 2013, worked with Unite and UNISON to develop a structure which uses up-to-date external data and organisational performance information to develop pay rewards. The scheme has helped many staff to gain financially, and has benefited managers by encouraging honest discussions during appraisals.
