Midlands charity spearheads trailblazing drive to help beat funding cuts

A Midlands-based charity is supporting a drive to help organisations beat public sector funding cuts by raising awareness of the far-reaching social benefits of their work.

Trident Reach the People Charity, which provides a range of support services for vulnerable people across the region, is crusading the need to measure services’ ‘social value’ to help win funding.

The charity is hosting a seminar on the subject in partnership with Make it Happen consultancy, specialists in income generation, social value and impact measurement.

The seminar on ‘Reaching and Measuring your own Social Impact and Value’ will take place on Wednesday, 12th February, at Bournville College Conference and Events Centre, in Birmingham, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Trident Reach is one of the first organisations in the UK to receive the Social Value Quality Mark, in recognition of its recent ongoing work to measure its services’ social value.

The charity is now keen to share good practice with fellow charities and other third sector bodies by hosting the seminar.

Janette Beckett, Executive Head of Support at Trident Reach, said: “The event will help organisations look at the bigger picture of what they do and how to measure their wider impact – their financial and non-financial value within communities.

“Producing such social value reports helps demonstrate to stakeholders and commissioners how important your work is not just to individuals but also the wider community.

“This might include supporting the local economy by using local businesses, creating employment opportunities whilst saving the public sector money by reducing demand on their services.”

Presenter Richard Dickins, Director of Make it Happen consultancy, will lead next week’s seminar.

He said: “The third sector is faced with many different challenges, including income generation, the changing political climate and increased competition for funds.

“Understanding your organisation’s social value and impact is an excellent way of demonstrating to stakeholders, service users and funders the value you have to them, the local community and society as a whole.

“Demonstrating this can help you win funding, maintain services and secure your organisation’s work into the future.”

Trident Reach provides housing, care and support services to vulnerable people with a range of needs across the Midlands region, including homeless people, those with disabilities or mental health problems, the elderly and people fleeing domestic abuse.

Make it Happen consultancy has supported the growth and ongoing sustainability of over 300 social/ethical businesses across the health, education, crime, employment, social care, environmental and housing sectors.
