 State-of-the-art extra care scheme opens in Torbay

Torbay’s Deputy Mayor, Dave Thomas joined Sanctuary Group and representatives from Torbay Council and Torbay Development Agency to celebrate the completion of Whitley Court, a state-of-the art extra care scheme in Hayes Road in Paignton.

Leading housing and care provider Sanctuary Group is developing a total of 123 new homes in a £14 million development at the Hayes Road site in phases, and the Whitley Court extra care scheme is the latest phase to be completed.

The final phase, comprising 32 apartments and seven bungalows, is due for completion in early 2015.

Whitley Court, named after the founding member of Paignton Zoo, Herbert Whitley, is a £7 million 62 bed scheme made up of individual self-contained apartments and bungalows designed to give residents maximum independence with care and support on site as needed. Communal facilities include a restaurant, lounge, hairdresser’s salon and multifunction room, which residents and neighbours alike can take advantage of.

The homes are available for rent through Devon Home Choice and shared ownership through South West Homes and Torbay Council has set up an allocation panel that includes Torbay and South Devon Health and Care NHS Trust to allocate properties to local people most in need.

This new, high quality scheme has been developed in partnership with contractors Leadbitter, a Bouygues UK company, Torbay Development Agency and Torbay Council and will be managed by Sanctuary Supported Living, part of Sanctuary Group. Supported with investment from the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency, Torbay Council has also contributed part of the land and £500,000 towards the development.

Andrew White, Sanctuary’s director of development - commercial said: “This is an exciting development for the area which will provide much needed homes for Torbay’s older residents. With its modern communal areas and state-of-the-art facilities, this scheme will provide tenants with a real sense of community.”

Torbay Council’s Deputy Mayor, Dave Thomas said: “I am delighted to be part of the celebration of this very successful scheme which sees more extra care facilities being developed to meet the needs of residents in Torbay. This is a notoriously difficult area of housing to develop, and this latest scheme shows once again that working in partnership enables us to deliver with maximum success.

 “It’s also important that we maintain the quality of design that is in keeping with the English Riviera, at the same time as ensuring good value for money for Torbay Council and its partners. I am pleased to see that Whitley Court has met both of these targets and is delivered on budget and on time.”
